The department of physics came into existence on the day the college was established during the academic year 1964-65. The University of Mysore accorded the affiliation to the department on the basis of the report of chairman of the then academic affiliation committee Dr. D. J. Dawar, Director Collegiate education, Mysore. First two academic years, 1964-65 and 1965-66, physics war offered as one of the optional for the one year intermediate course (Now Pre-University Course, PUC). In the year 1966-67 affiliation for B.Sc. course was obtained. Sri P. N. Babu Prasad was the head and only faculty in the department. First year student’s strength was 24. Two laboratories were constructed; they were equipped with sophisticated and precision equipments (some of which are still being used). Then on the department grew like a banyan tree. Year by year the student’s strength increased; accordingly numbers of faculty members are also increased. Prof. C. B. Chandrasekharappa, the founder Principal, was the instrumental in choosing the ablest and scholarly faculty, who rendered yeomen service to the department in particular and to the college in general. From 1966-67 to 1983-84; the Physics subject was taught as major and minor subject for undergraduate course. From 1984-85 all the optional subjects were accorded the equal weightage for undergraduate course. The enthusiasm, hard work and competitive nature among the faculty members excelled the level of teaching beyond the expectations of the stake holders. As a result many talented students brought laurels to the department and are well placed in the different organizations of the State, Country and Abroad. The physics department was the pioneer in conducting the extracurricular activities for science students under the banner of Science Association, by collecting one rupee from each science students to meet the expenditures. Later it was made part of the fees towards the association, at the time of admission.
